Community Connect

Community Connect

Agritourism involves any agriculturally based activity

that brings visitors to a farm.

In keeping with our management plan’s goal of promoting recreational use of the farm, we are always looking for ways to engage the community with what we do here. Not only do we offer carriage rides around the acreage and our biennial Forest Farm Field Day, but we also provide mentorships and internships. These Agritourism and educational programs give us an opportunity to share Banks Mountain with the public and educate people about coexisting with nature and working to improve the environment.

Carriage Rides

Carriage rides on the mountain are popular with families and couples alike. Rides are 45 minutes in length and are available by reservation on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Bob and the work horses are also available for carriage rides for weddings and private parties at offsite locations.

Forestry Field Day

Banks Mountain’s Forest Farm Field Day is a highlight of our days on the farm. Held biennially this all-day event includes farm demonstrations, as well as presentations on forest farming, harvesting timber with horses, and the farm ecosystem. The Field Day lunch features farm-raised pork BBQ, with proceeds benefitting a local food pantry. The next Field Day event is scheduled for Saturday October 23, 2021.

Mentorships

Stuart and Bob have lots of knowledge that they are eager to pass on. In the spirit of “paying it forward,” they are open to educating current and would-be farmers who are interested in learning about forest farming and farm self-sustainability.

Internships

Farm internships are also available for college students who are looking to receive valuable first-hand experience in all aspects of forest farming. Onsite lodging is provided, in the farm’s tiny cabin, in addition to access to the food supply. In the past, we have welcomed interns from the University of Kentucky and Warren Wilson College.
